The European
Commission’s 2024–2025 State of Schengen report underscores the urgent
need to accelerate the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the
European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to enhance border
security within the Schengen Area. Labeling Schengen as the backbone of the
EU’s internal market, the report highlights digitalisation as crucial in
combating potential threats. It also stresses that timely adoption of related
proposals and smooth rollout of ETIAS are essential, amid ongoing
implementation challenges in some Member States. Progress is being made on
digitalising travel documents and visa processes, aiming for more secure and
efficient travel for third-country nationals. With half a billion visitors,
Schengen remains the world's top travel destination. Security improvements and
the accession of Bulgaria and Romania are also seen as key achievements.
